Perhaps our contemporary attention age …

Perhaps our contemporary attention age with its two-edged ‘sword’ of AI is yet another ‘messy middle‘ that poses a riddle of agency and trust. The question of which is better: wielding technology (wizardry), command (extrinsic capacity), or personal agency (intrinsic capacity). The puzzle of efficacy and sustainability with traditional takes on power. [1][2]

Which reminds me of past legends & lore, whether real or imagined. Like the fictional ‘Riddle of Steel‘:

The “Riddle of Steel” is the central philosophical theme of the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian. It revolves around two primary questions: what gives a person true power, and what – if anything – can be trusted in a brutal world. – AI Overview

Epigraph …

we’ve lost that analog feeling
daily drama leaves us reeling
the AI slop only shows it
that something’s dying, you know it

whoa, that analog feelin’
is it gone, gone, whoa-oh-oh-oh

we’ve lost that analog feeling

(bled through the glass)

it’s an everyday local scene
a heart by heart evening beat
as the day falls from its high
our shadows walk the street

but you scroll your Facebook stream
and i my Instagram feed
our attention passes without book markers
that might remind us what we need

as we go forth in wonderland
and the agency of glass
is the bar that we must pass

our lives are twined in rhythms
of taps on screens of glass
we bob our heads like pigeons
pecking seeds upon the grass

we chat without speaking
our replies in emoji complete
and nothing’s left to dangle
our data packets are concrete

for we go forth in wonderland
and the agency of glass
is the bar that we must pass

yes, we seek for words to relate
using chatbots in our stead
can our agency be outsourced?
is analog really dead?

and how our days pass in echos
our desires blending together
wed to algorithmic matters
we’re now avatars of chatters

lost like alice in wonderland
and the agency of glass
is the bar that we must pass

Outro

embrace me
that sweet agency within you
attend me
there’s no displacing you
guide me
through the shadows cast by you
24/7, 24/7, do
my glowing irreplaceable you

The Lore of the Riddle

AI Overview

The “Riddle of Steel” is the central philosophical theme of the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian. It revolves around two primary questions: what gives a person true power, and what – if anything – can be trusted in a brutal world.

The Lore of the Riddle

In the film’s opening, Conan’s father explains the Cimmerian lore of their god, Crom. According to the myth, gods and giants long fought over the secret of steel. In their rage, the gods lost the secret on the battlefield, where ordinary men found it.

Conan’s father teaches him that flesh, human loyalties, and beasts cannot be trusted. The only thing that will never betray a person is steel. He tasks young Conan with learning the “discipline and riddle of steel,” setting the stage for the rest of the movie.

The Three Perspectives

Throughout the movie, three conflicting philosophies are presented about the riddle:

The Father’s Answer (The Strength of Steel): Initially, the answer is that steel is supreme. However, this theory fails when Conan’s father’s sword is snapped in half by Conan’s enemies. Steel can break, meaning it cannot be trusted completely.

Thulsa Doom’s Answer (The Strength of Flesh): The film’s antagonist, Thulsa Doom, argues that steel is useless without the human hand that wields it. He commands unquestioning devotion and proves this power by compelling one of his followers to leap to her death at his mere glance. To Doom, flesh and the mind controlling it are superior to mere metal.

Conan’s Answer (The Indomitable Will): After surviving the horrors of slavery and losing everything, Conan realizes that both physical steel and flesh can fail or break. The ultimate answer to the riddle is the unbreakable human will. It is a person’s inner drive, courage, and determination [agency] that masters both tools and bodies, allowing an individual to control their own destiny.

Notes

[1] Our anatomical capacities have evolved by surviving, but how do we choose to survive, what do we wield to thrive – to grow individually and collectively?

[Prompt] analysis in the context of authentic power: He debated which is better: wielding technology, command, or personal agency.

AI Overview

When evaluated through the lens of authentic power – the spiritual and philosophical concept of aligning one’s personality with their soul – personal agency is the only true source of sustainable power. Technology and command are merely forms of external leverage that, when relied upon independently, ultimately lead to disconnection, fear, and ineffectiveness.

The debate between these three forms of power reveals a distinct hierarchy:

  1. Technology (The Illusion of Control)

What it is: Wielding tools, systems, and algorithms to manipulate the environment and achieve outcomes.

The Limitations: Technology is morally and energetically neutral. It expands the capacity to act, but it does not dictate the integrity of the action. Relying on technology as a foundation for power assumes that mastering the external world creates internal fulfillment, which is a fallacy.

  1. Command (The Trap of Ego)

What it is: The use of authority, hierarchy, or force to compel others and enforce obedience.

The Limitations: This is often defined as “power-over”. In the context of authentic power, command creates a dynamic of resistance, fear, and dependency. It requires constant maintenance and drains both the wielder and the subject of their vitality.

  1. Personal Agency (The Seat of Authentic Power)

What it is: The ability to consciously choose your responses, attitudes, and intentions in every moment. It is the inner authority that comes from understanding your values and living in alignment with them.

Why it is “Better”: According to spiritual teachers like Gary Zukav, authentic power stems from the alignment of your personality with your soul. Unlike technology or command, personal agency generates positive energy, builds deep inner resilience, and empowers those around you. It is a resource that no one can take away.

Summary of the Debate

If the goal is to shape the world merely by force or manipulation, technology and command are effective. However, if the goal is to lead a fulfilling life, create lasting harmony, and evolve spiritually, personal agency is definitively superior. It transforms technology from a crutch into a useful tool and replaces command with willing cooperation and inspiration. [2] John Henry (folklore) – man vs. machine

The story of John Henry is told in a classic blues folk song about his duel against a drilling machine, which exists in many versions, and has been the subject of numerous stories, plays, books, and novels.

Prompt: john henry (legendary steel-driving man) as a metaphor

AI Overview

The legend of John Henry is one of America’s most enduring folk tales. As a metaphor, he represents the ultimate clash between human endurance and mechanization, symbolizing the dignity, pride, and tragic vulnerability of the working class in the face of relentless technological progress. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Man vs. Machine & The Cost of Progress

The climax of John Henry’s story—racing a steam-powered drill—serves as the quintessential metaphor for traditional human labor trying to outpace automation. John Henry beats the machine by a few feet but collapses and dies from the strain. This highlights: [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • The Trap of Obsolescence: It reflects the tragic futility of competing with technology purely through sheer brute force and harder work. [1, 2]
  • The Human Cost: His death signifies the tragic reality of workers being chewed up and discarded by the industrial or corporate forces that prioritize speed and profit. [1, 2, 3]

The Dignity of Labor & The American Spirit

For generations, John Henry has been embraced as the champion of the working class. [1, 2, 3]

  • Worker Pride: His hammer represents the sweat equity and foundational skill of human workers who physically built the nation’s infrastructure, proving that human spirit cannot be completely commodified or replaced. [1, 2, 3]
  • Defiance: His refusal to be beaten down by the “captain” or the “steam drill” exemplifies the defiance of the marginalized individual fighting for respect and agency against overwhelming corporate or societal odds. [1, 2]

• The song (one of many versions)

Prompt: lyrics:the new christy minstrels “john henry and the steam drill” and “natural man“, both on land of giants (1964)

[Excerpt]

Well, tell me, John Henry!
What can you do that my steam drill can’t?

Well, I can drive your steel in the blisterin’ sun
And make every stroke just right
And when you’re talking quit, I’ve just begun
And I’ll finish it, just for spite

I can raise me a ruckus, when the work’s all done
Get drunk on a Saturday night, ha-ha-ha!

Why, you look a-here, boy!
If you wanna work for me, you gotta beat my steam drill
We gonna have a little contest

John Henry, you beat my steam drill right ‘nough
But you want wages and it don’t
Why you ain’t nothin’ but a machine yourself, boy
What you got that it ain’t?

Well, I got good times and I got my share of troubles, every day
And I got me a wife, and kids who care when things don’t go my way
And I got me someone way up there, who hears me when I pray

[3] While catching up on my reading today (7-10-2026), I ran across this depiction re my metaphor “avatars of chatters.”

Also a reminder of the 2010 film The Social Network and the upcoming sequel The Social Reckoning.

The Social Dilemma (2020) – avatars

• Wiki > The Social Dilemma (2020) > Narrative

The narrative depicts Ben [teenager] and Isla [adolescent] as they are increasingly affected by social media and internet addictions, driven by the Engagement, Growth, and Advertisement AIs, represented by anthropomorphized tech executives in a “behind-the-screen” control room who find ways to keep their users as addicted to social media as possible while only viewing them as depersonalized avatars, with little concern for theirs or society’s well-being.

At the end of the narrative, the AIs merge into one entity while Ben’s avatar becomes a human representation of himself, and they stare at each other.

The Social Reckoning (2026)

[YouTube Description]
The Social Reckoning, a companion piece to The Social Network, is coming exclusively to theatres October 9, 2026.

A companion piece to the hit film The Social Network, Sorkin’s original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

Personal agency

AI Overview

In modern contexts, personal agency is the psychological and sociological capacity to act independently. It represents your power to make intentional choices, exert control over your life, and proactively shape your circumstances, rather than simply reacting to outside forces or societal structures.

Core Dimensions

The phrase is built on key psychological frameworks:

Self-Efficacy: Rooted in Socio-Cognitive Theory, it is the belief that your actions will lead to positive outcomes.

Intentionality & Forethought: The ability to formulate goals, plan actions, and execute them deliberately.

Responsibility: The ethical recognition that with personal autonomy comes accountability for your decisions and their broader impact.

Its Role in Modern Culture

Personal agency is highly debated and frequently leveraged across different areas of life:

Leadership & Wellness: Self-development culture frames personal agency as the ultimate tool for upward mobility, resilience, and flourishing, empowering individuals to take the “driver’s seat” in their careers.

Sociology & Ethics: Sociologists debate the balance between individual agency and systemic structures, recognizing that true personal agency requires an environment that supports self-determination.

Mental Health: Clinical research – including computational Text Analysis – links a low sense of personal agency to depression and feelings of powerlessness.

algorithmic ambition

Prompt: phrase: metered to algorithmic ambition

AI Overview

This phrase captures the modern struggle between human desire and machine optimization. It describes a shift from boundless human ambition to goals shaped, limited, and directed by data, metrics, and artificial intelligence.

Breaking It Down

  • Metered: Controlled, measured, and constrained. Your actions, growth, or output are continuously quantified into data points.
  • Algorithmic: Driven by code, predictive models, and automated systems. It relies on logic rather than intuition.
  • Ambition: The drive to succeed, achieve goals, or create meaningful impact.

The Real-World Impact

When ambition becomes “metered to algorithmic ambition,” it means your goals are no longer purely your own. Instead, they are heavily influenced—or entirely shaped—by the digital systems around you.

Here is how this plays out in a few key areas:

  • In the Workplace: Your performance is often quantified by algorithmic metrics (e.g., lines of code, keystrokes, response times, or automated efficiency ratings). This forces employees to tailor their career goals to hit the numbers that the system rewards.
  • In the Creator Economy: Success on platforms (like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube) is entirely driven by algorithmic visibility. Creators often adjust their artistic ambition to match what the algorithm favors, resulting in optimized, uniform content rather than unique human expression.
  • The “Black Box” Problem: Society increasingly relies on algorithms to make life-altering decisions regarding credit, jobs, or healthcare. Because these models are opaque, we are often forced to adjust our behavior to appease “the system” without fully understanding the underlying logic.

Ultimately, this phrase warns against handing too much control over to technology. When ambition is solely measured by algorithms, it risks losing its humanity, intuition, and authentic purpose.

Re-prompt: phrase: metered to algorithmic ambition

AI Overview

“Metered to algorithmic ambition” describes a shift from open-ended, human-driven striving to rigidly calculated, data-driven outcomes. It highlights a dynamic where personal success, content performance, or resource distribution is carefully rationed, measured, and optimized by technology rather than organic growth. [1, 2, 3]

The phrase frequently surfaces across different contexts:

1. In the Digital Economy

It critiques how the creator economy and gig work function. Instead of building a steady, organic audience, creators and workers are forced to meter their efforts to appease platform algorithms (e.g., SEO, engagement metrics) to gain visibility or income. [1, 2, 3]

2. In AI and Tech Infrastructure

As large-scale artificial intelligence moves toward a metered, utility-like model, ambitious projects are restricted by measurable consumption (e.g., compute tokens, electricity, and water). Here, ambition is literally rationed by system capacity and cost. [1, 2]

3. In Personal Development

It raises philosophical concerns about losing agency. When we rely too heavily on AI tools or predictive social media, we risk having our natural ambition curbed by the machine’s predefined patterns, “metering” human creativity and problem-solving. [1, 2, 3]

Comments

A prior version of the last stanza’s lines was angled differently (metered to algorithmic ambition / we’ve become avatars of consumption), which departed from the tight end-rhymes of the rest of the poem. Slant rhyme acts as a poetic device—a ghostly auditory echo like the poem itself is breaking down or being unmade by the algorithm. Signifying an arrhythmia or shock of shattering glass, as the tightly controlled, rhythmic “pigeon pecking” of the earlier stanzas gives way to a chaotic, mechanical reality. It mimics how algorithms offer only calculated approximations of human harmony. It jolts the reader out of an easy cadence.

Opinion: The power of “agency” in the refrain … The phrase “and the agency of glass” acts as a ironic anchor. Glass is supposed to be transparent – it is supposed to let us look through it. But here, the glass itself has agency. It has become the actor, the gatekeeper, and the boundary line.

Presentation tips

AI Overview

[Based on a prior version of the last stanza’s lines: metered to algorithmic ambition / we’ve become avatars of consumption.]

Given the Simon & Garfunkel influence, the performance should feel intimate, weary, and slightly detached—like a confession whispered in an empty, echoing room.

Here is a performance blueprint for a spoken-word recording, focusing on dramatic pauses, vocal delivery, and simple audio textures you can add.

The Vocal Delivery Strategy

  • The Tone: Low, close to the microphone, and conversational. Do not “project” like a theater actor. Speak as if your partner is sitting across from you, but they are looking at their phone, and you are saying these words to the back of their head.
  • The “Inertia” Pacing: Keep your tempo steady and unhurried. Let the words drag slightly, mimicking the weight of exhaustion and routine.

Simple Audio Tricks for Your Recording

Simple Audio Tricks for Your Recording

If you or a friend records this on a phone or computer, you can make it sound incredibly cinematic with just a couple of free effects (using simple software like Audacity or GarageBand):

  1. The “Close-Mic” Effect: Record in a very quiet room (a walk-in closet full of clothes is perfect for absorbing echoes). Sit very close to the mic and speak softly. It creates a chillingly intimate, “in-your-head” sound.
  2. The Digital Shadow (Vocal Layering): Take the final stanza and duplicate your audio track. On the second track, lower the volume, shift the pitch slightly down, and add a heavy room echo (reverb). Play it quietly underneath your main voice. It will make you sound like you are literally turning into a digital avatar on the recording.

    Language of dit-dah

Prompt: morse code as a contemporary metaphor

    [AI Overview]

In our era of continuous streams, video calls, and algorithmic feeds, Morse code serves as a powerful metaphor for signal over noise. It represents stripped-down, essential communication – distilling complex, overwhelming noise into deliberate rhythms, and finding connection through pure presence and absence

As a contemporary metaphor, Morse code appears across several different facets of modern life:

    * Digital Mindfulness: Amidst the oversaturation of modern instant messaging, Morse code represents intentional communication. It reminds us that sometimes slowing down to send a short, precise message is more effective than shouting into the digital void.

    * Resilience in Antiquity: Even though our primary networks are now fully digital, Morse code operates as a reliable fallback. It acts as a metaphor for analogue resilience and survival when the high-tech grid fails.

    * Subtle Signaling: You can think of Morse code as a form of modern, accessible encryption. It represents hidden meanings, “dog-whistling,” or speaking in a shared dialect that only those paying close attention can truly understand.

The influence of dots, dashes, and deliberate pauses even mirrors the foundation of binary computing. This dialectic between presence and absence – a signal or a space – is the very heartbeat of all contemporary digital systems.

    Further Exploration

    * Read about how Morse code laid the groundwork for modern digital communication in this Medium article.

In an era chiefly controlled by instant messaging, emojis and video calls, Morse code may appear like a relic of antiquity. However, it is still applicable in surprising ways.

    Let's chat 1966

As far as the contemporary context of my homage, it’s interesting that both the song The Dangling Conversation and the first chatbot – MIT’s chatty software program Eliza – were released in 1966.

In the early 1970’s, I actually watched a demo of Eliza on a campus where I was working. I was amazed how quickly many became engaged in personal conversations with Eliza, all via a clunky teletype-like interface.

Although the program was intended to demonstrate “shallow communications between machines and humans,” by mimicking the style of a “Rogerian psychotherapist,” it showcased that “even a shred of empathy was powerful in connecting to humans.” (And by then I’d read some of Rogers‘ writings and related articles on psychotherapy in Psychology Today.)

As noted in this 2022 MIT article, the Peabody Foundational Award was for Digital and Interactive Storytelling!

    • MIT News > ELIZA wins Peabody Award by Rachel Gordon (March 24, 2022) – In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum of MIT designed a computer program to be a tool for emotional connection. 56 years later, the ELIZA program has received a (Legacy) Peabody Award.

This 2026 article discusses the ongoing debate on whether, as we interact with the “looking glass,” there’s something mirroring a smidgen of consciousness or an emotional tone. More than mimicry.

Personally, I’m more interested in whether AIs carry “awareness” of the common weal rather than localized wellness.

More concerned whether AIs are more than branded tech entities with perceived personalities – more than artfully crafted assets, much like fictional mascots (such as “Tony the Tiger” for cereals, …).

More curious about whether our brains are more than computers, if computers at all.
